IANA 86s…
Typically as soon as it is reported that four appear to have worked their last in Anglia then two are returned to service and another receives attention. Further to yesterday’s report 86227 and 86238 have been pressed back into service whilst 86215 has been noted back on Crown Point and active. 86209 remains dumped in the nearby engineers yard.

The six Class 87s, 87009 87011 87017 87018 87020 and 87034, recently moved into MoD Bicester for storage have been transferred to the SBXL pool. Fellow stored 87005 at Willesden and 87028 left behind at Wembley remain allocated to the IWCA pool.

IANA 86s 29/04/04…
A fleet survey reveals that ONE currently have but seven Class 86s available for daily use. Three, 86209 86215 and 86227, have been stopped with ‘not to be used’ restrictions in place whilst 86238 is stopped and showing as GONE whatever that is supposed to mean. Either way it looks ominous. 86235 is still away at Springburn.

Anglia 86s…
86215 and 86227 appear to have been stood down joining in 86209 in Norwich Engineers yard whilst 86238 could also be in trouble having failed in traffic today. Five Class 86s were out and about on ONE diagrams today, this currently being the usual daily deployment for the 86s for now.

Toton Training Compound…
37275 47767 and 56061 have been returned to the compound proper being replaced on the line near the paint shop for de-fuelling etc. by 58014 58038 and 58048.

27/04/04
09020 (WSSC) successfully handled the 8P55, 8P56, 0P57 and 8P58 trials between Hardendale and Shap yesterday.
86604 has been stored DHLT at, as far as can be ascertained, Crewe Basford Hall.

More shunters on the move by road…
08782 (WSWM) was unloaded at Warrington yesterday afternoon following delivery from Allerton whilst 08904 (WSWR) latterly located in the Plymouth area was noted heading north west on the M5 this afternoon. In substantially reducing their shunter fleet during February and March EWS must have made some savings, on paper at least, but all these road transfers, especially of late, must be costing a few bob to finance.

26/04/04
08411 (WSXX) was at Motherwell when stored as suspected. Its position at Deanside Transit being taken by recently reinstated 08933. Fellow recently reinstated 08623 (WSWM) was transferred by road to Trafford Park on the 24th to facilitate the release of 09020 to Hardendale.
09205 (WNTR) has, since being noted on the A1 near Northallerton, turned up at Ferrybridge.

25/04/04
08951 (WSAW) latterly in action at ASW Cardiff was noted heading north on the M5 near Droitwich yesterday morning. It is understood that 08951 is being moved to Castleton and pending confirmation should have been replaced at ASW by 08900 (WSXX) from Margam.
09020 (WSSC) from Trafford Park was swapped with 08632 (WNTR) at Hardendale yesterday after being moved north by road. 08632 was then taken back south to Allerton.
60021 has been named ‘Star of the East’ at Immingham.

24/04/04
43158 and 43194 have been stored, both SBXL. Whilst 43194 is laid up at Neville Hill and was earmarked for storage the transfer to SBXL of 43158 which is still in active traffic is thought to be a clerical error.
47756 (WNXX) was still at Willesden Railnet with 47727 (WNXX) earlier today.

Shunter news…
08411 has been stored again, WSXX at Deanside Transit (possibly at Motherwell now though). 08623 from store at Doncaster Carr is reinstated to Bescot’s WSWM pool which has lost 08632, stored WNTR at Hardendale. 09020 is being / has been moved up from Trafford Park and is transferred to the WSSC pool accordingly.
08757 recently moved by road to Daventry is reinstated to the WSWM pool but 08775, thought to be at Wembley, has been stored WNTR. Lastly 08933 has been reinstated to WSSC at Motherwell.

23/04/04 23:55
09205 (WNTR) latterly in store at Motherwell is on the move by road having being noted on the A1 near Northallerton this evening.

WNZX again…

These transfers indicate that everything at the CRDC bar 08481 08815 08825 08877 37407 37414 47778 and Freightliner’s 86603 that are not already up for sale are going to be coming up for sale.

23/04/04 19:35

08528 (WNTR) has been moved up to Doncaster Carr by road from Peterborough whilst 08577 (WNTR) has turned up at Bescot as anticipated.
47145 was out on test in multiple with 47355 (both SDFL) yesterday working from derby to Shirebrook and back.
47784 (WNXX) was observed shunting fellow stored 47756 (WNXX) at Crewe DMD yesterday evening. It is understood that at least 47756 is due for movement to Old Oak Common for stripping for spares. Its bogies are earmarked for transfer to 47832 (IWLA) currently at Landore awaiting a set prior to being transferred to Cotswold Rail.

86235 (IANA) was moved from Glasgow works to Polmadie today by 67008 in readiness for its mainline test run. Although repainted in Anglia colours it sold be noted that 86235 has the white stripe but no ‘Anglia’ branding.

Fred no show…
The planned movement of 66575 66576 and 66577 from Newport this morning was cancelled, probably because the locomotives had not been registered in time. Maybe tomorrow…

22/04/04 09:20

Shunter news…
08577 (Daventry) 08786 (Old Oak Common) and 08918 (Temple Mills) have been stored, all WNTR. This reduction to the fleet is partially offset by the reinstatement of 08842 (ex Old Oak Common) to the WSLN pool and 09103 (ex Motherwell) to the WSSC pool.
08757 (WSXX) has been removed from Bescot by road being noted heading south on the M6 near junction 3 yesterday.

66951…
Although nowhere near the UK yet 66951 has also been registered and allocated to the WNSS pool.

Potential moves part 1…
The transfer of 66575 66576 and 66577 from Newport to Crewe is booked to run this morning. Newport Docks 10:52, Alexandra Dock Junction 11:12, Newport 11:17, Abergavenny 11:45, Hereford 12:10, Leominster 12:24, Shrewsbury 13:06-13:24, Wem 13:39, Nantwich 13:55, Crewe Basford Hall 14:06.

Potential moves part 2…
Tomorrows transfer for the Bicester bound Class 87s is Wembley 06:53, Willesden West 07:05, Acton Mainline 07:12, MoD Bicester 09:25.

21/04/04
37709 (WNTR) was ‘maintenance complete’ and status normal at Toton for a while yesterday but is now on decision.
87009 87018 and 87020 (all still IWCA) have been removed from Wembley to MoD Bicester this morning being taken west behind 66546. A similar movement for 87011 87017 87028 and 87034 currently languishing at Wembley is scheduled to run on the morning of the 23rd. As a consequence these seven Class 87s which had been listed as simply ‘off lease’ have now joined 87005 on the storage lists.
90005 and 90011 which recently entered traffic on Anglia diagrams are, although de-branded and de-named, still allocated to the IWCA pool. Only 90003 and 90004 have, so far, been formally transferred to IANA.

New Freds…
66575 66576 66577 and 66952 were off loaded at Newport on the 19th. 66575 66576 and 66577 have yet to be registered but odd ball 66952 which is due for transfer to Toton for VAB registration purposes has been registered but allocated to the WNSS storage pool to facilitate its movement.

Barrow Hill progress…
Devon bound 37037 has been started for the first time since its arrival at Barrow Hill from Wigan CRDC for restoration whilst 37510 has been on the jacks for its mandatory bogie inspection required as part of the re-certification process. HNRC anticipate a start up for 37510, for which it is still planned to retain its Inter-City livery, in the near future. 73138 has been rubbed down and repainting into large logo blue is underway.

19/04/04
08731 has been returned to Merehead, noted on site yesterday.
37220 (WNXX) and 37422 (WKCK) have been extracted from Toton Training Compound and moved to the rear of the nearby main shed.
43005 (IWRP) recently returned to service is understood to have been at the expense of 43004 (IWRP) which is deemed to be in a bad way and facing permanent retirement. 43009 (IWPA) also remains out of use awaiting a decision on its future.
73205 (GBED) now sporting full GBRf livery at Derby has been to Litchurch Lane for third rail testing recently.
86235 (IANA) currently at Glasgow works, now de-named, is expected to be out on test sometime this week.
87026 (IWCA) was released from Brush today being hauled to Willesden by 57309 this morning.

Hardendale trials resumed, briefly…
08632 was back in action working between Shap and Hardendale today although it is understood that the trials were supposed to be starting next week. Network Rail have raised objections to a Class 08 being used so a higher speed Class 09 is to be sourced for further trials.

18/04/04
90005 and 90011 (IANA now?) have moved over to Anglia ready to enter traffic with ONE. Both are still in VT colours.

Disposal…
The demolition of 56010 has been undertaken at Booth Roe Rotherham, its disposal was at a fairly advanced stage on the 16th. 56010 was stored from Immingham’s WGAN pool in November 1999, RIP.

17/04/04
08689 has been reinstated from store at Immingham to the WSEM pool exchanging places with 08735 which is now stored WNTR at Immingham. 08623 (Doncaster Carr) 08993 (St Blazey) and 08994 (Swindon) have also been added to the WNTR pool from WSXX.

16/04/04
08731 latterly in a part stripped state at LH Plant, Barton under Needwood has been removed by road. It was last noted in the East Bristol area near the end of the M32 but at the time of sighting was heading north.
56053 and 56055 (both WNXX) along with 56072 (WNSS) have made their move from Doncaster Carr to Healey Mills.
90033 (WNTR) has completed its transfer from Motherwell to Crewe EMD via a trip south to Wembley then back north to Warrington before being taken south again to Crewe today.

Anglia / ONE 86s…
ONE have issued a press statement on their web site outlining the schedule for phasing out the Class 86s, full details of which can be found at the following URL [ http://www.oneanglia.com/latest-information/news-detail.asp?id=556 ]. They anticipate full displacement of the Class 86s by Class 90s by mid May however several are to be retained till towards the end of the year.

Preservation plugs…
A couple of items of interest. It is hoped to, subject to successful transportation from the NRM York, have 50033 in action on the NYMR for their gala weekend (April 23rd-April 25th) before it is transferred for static exhibit at Swindon. Also the Mid Hants Railway wish to announce their successful purchase of DEMU 205025 from Porterbrook and that they hope to have it available in time for this year’s diesel gala.

15/04/04 18:55
90033 (WNTR) has been brought south from Motherwell to Wembley and was due for transfer back north, probably to Crewe, this afternoon.

Shunter news…
The EWS shunter shuffle continues.

08804 recently moved up to Oxford has been reinstated to the WSWR pool exchanging places with former Oxford resident 08856 which is now stored WSXX at Didcot. 08561 has been stored WNTR at Bescot but 08742 at Northampton and 08909 in the Shotton area, both of which have been in use whilst stored, have been reinstated, both to WSWM. Similarly 09009 at Stewarts Lane is reinstated to the WSLS pool.
08633 at Doncaster is reinstated to the WSNE and pool allowing for the transfer of 09106 which has remained in the Doncaster area from WSNE to WSEM. Lastly 09203 currently stored at Cardiff Canton has been added to the WNTR strategic reserve pool from WSXX.

These changes leave EWS with 93 shunters allocated to the operational pools.

15/04/05 11:20
56006 (WNSS) went south from Doncaster in the consist of a Wakefield to Wembley freight yesterday evening hauled by 66142. It should be at Old Oak Common by now where, the general consensus is that, it is to be tidied up prior to being exhibited at the York Railfest in May.
56053 (WNXX) 56055 (WNXX) and 56072 (WNSS) are booked for movement off Doncaster Carr to Healey Mills via the 19:45 6G45 Doncaster to Healey Mills this evening.

14/04/04 17:30
08866 (WSWM) latterly out-based in the Crewe area is on the move north by road being noted early this afternoon traversing the M6 near Wigan.
56006 (WNSS) was hauled west to Doncaster from Immingham by 60014 this afternoon as planned.

Willesden clear out…
The ‘off lease’ Class 87s latterly lined up alongside Willesden depot have been moved into nearby Wembley, 87005 remains on Willesden. Probably in connection with the mooted partial return of mail traffic with GBRf at the helm several Class 325 postal units have appeared prompting the removal of the 87s to make space. A third Class 90, possibly 90007, has received the ‘ONE’ treatment whist another, also unidentified, was inside rubbed down for repainting.

14/04/04 12:55
08648 (MOLO) has been out-shopped in a non standard livery of all over yellow with half black cab sides at Wabtec. It is being fitted with auto coupler equipment and is due to go on a three year hire contract with a firm in the Midlands once released to traffic.
37416 (WKBM) is on its way back to Scotland via a trip to Thornaby for load bank testing following repainting at Toton. Its ‘Royal Scotsman’ crests and EWS logo’s were applied yesterday.
56006 (WNSS) with an assignment for movement to Old Oak Common for special tests is booked for haulage from Immingham to Doncaster via the 15:03 6D66 service.
60069 (WCAN) has been released from repairs at Toton.

13/04/04
08804 (WNTR) has been on the move again, this time from Didcot to Hinksey yard, Oxford.
37406 (WKBM) has been sent south to help out with the WKCK pool shortage, 37203 (WKAD) being due an A exam today. 37406 came south yesterday at the head of a charter with 37427 before being despatched light engine to South Wales overnight. 37406 was on Newport very early this morning.
47790 47792 and 56095 (all WNTR) have made the trip from Healey Mills to Knottingley for de-fuelling etc.
86621 (DFNC) is now in Freightliner livery, observed as such at Crewe LNWR recently.

Advenza…
The latest indications are that the Advenza freight service to be powered by Fragonset traction will be getting underway on the 19th. It has also been indicated that we might be seeing electric haulage over the WCML section however there seems to be an apparent gauge problem regarding the extraction of the four Class 86s from Immingham Railfreight Terminal.

12/04/04
08516 (WSXX) has re-appeared outside at Toton being utilised today in the shunting of 37416 out of the paintshop and the transfer of 56050 56075 and 56130 from the compound (see below).
37203 (WKAD) is again on Cardiff Valley lines workings today. The WKCK fleet is down to two operational Class 37s, 37417 and 37425, at the moment as 37402 has been sent off to Temple Mills with wheelset problems and 37422 is still languishing at Toton in need of a replacement power unit.
37416 (WKBM) has been out-shopped in Royal Scotsman colours at Toton. Nameplates still off and no crests as yet though.
56050 56075 and 56130 (all WNZX) have been repositioned to the concrete pad adjacent to the paint shop at Toton from the Training compound. As these three have all recently been on sale it is quite likely that removal by road is on the cards.

11/04/04
67020 (WAAK) has, after quite some time undergoing attention at Toton, returned to active use.

Toton shunters…
On the 10th their disposition at Toton was thus… 08414 08635 08683 08896 08910 08912 08915 and 08942 are the eight lined up on the snowplough headshunt, 08480 and 08500 are to the rear of the depot. It is assumed that 08516 and 08711 are currently inside.

Barton Hill 11/04/04…
Outside were 37379 37696 56090 and 66226. 56090 was running whilst 37379 has been stripped for parts. This explains why it has remained allocated to the WNXX pool. Inside were 08585 37377 56117 56118 and 73141. Of interest is that 37377 has been painted in grey primer ready for an application of an as yet undetermined colour scheme.

10/04/04
56060 56094 and 56115 (all WNTR) were moved from Knottingley to Healey Mills this afternoon between 66109 and 60084.

Disposal…
The remains of 47310 have been finished off at Booth Roe Rotherham in the last few days. Attention has now turned to 47476, both bodysides off, and 56010, one bodyside removed. 47310 was stored from Bescot’s WHBF pool in February 1999, RIP.

56003…
Whilst it’s good news that 56003 currently at Booth Roe, Rotherham is being secured for preservation the same cannot be said for the two locomotives that are understood to be going to Booth’s as part of an exchange deal for 56003. Doomed are 37904 and 56023, both of which are practically beyond redemption anyway.

09/04/04
08842 (WNTR) has been removed from Crewe EMD and was noted on the M1 Junction 9 earlier today. It is thought to have been Old Oak Common bound.
37227 currently on the Battlefield Line has been removed from the storage lists as its purchase from HNRC and passing into preservation has been confirmed.
60094 (WCAN) has been out-shopped in EWS colours at Toton. Naming ceremony to follow.

Sign of the times…?
There were no Anglia, sorry, ONE Class 86s in service today.

Knottingley 56s…
56094 has been de-named and de-fuelled etc. 56115 was, when viewed today, in the shed being de-named and de-fuelled whilst 56078 awaits its turn. All are of course WNTR.

08/04/04 13:30
45112 (SDMS) and 47355 (SDFL) have been turned out for today’s St Pancras specials.
58025 and 58029 (both WFGF) at Eastleigh are now in GIF livery.
86217 86223 and 86250 (all SAXL) have completed their move to Oxley being taken north during the night initially from Wembley to Bescot.

08/04/04 03:10

EWS shunter fleet (further) amendments…
Further to the pools reorganisation a couple of days ago EWS have amended some of the home depot allocations.

WSAW & WSGW: These have been reallocated from Cardiff Canton to Margam.
WSLN: The three shunters that were left allocated to Old Oak Common have now joined the rest of the pool at Temple Mills.
WSNE: These shunters are now allocated to Thornaby as opposed to Immingham.

07/04/04 19:45

56078 and 56115 (both WNTR) have arrived at Knottingley but the three Bristol bound 56s, 56090 56117 and 56118 (all WNXX) appear to still be at Newport.

Oxley 86s…
There has been a change of plan. While Merlin Rail / Fragonset are still taking on four Class 86s at Oxley for charter and general hire work it has been established that they are not coming from Immingham Railfreight Terminal as first indicated. Well all bar one anyway. Shunter news…
EWS have had a bit of a pool reorganisation. Full transfer details are listed in the RSL section but the highlights of the changes are outlined below.

WSAS: Pool disbanded with the allocation being split between WSLN, WSLS and WSWR, three new pools.
WSAW: No change.
WSEM: A new pool based at Toton for East Midlands and Eastern area duties. Its allocation is made up from a combination of some from WSMD and some from WSNE.
WSGW: Pool allocation reduced. Several transferred to a new pool coded WSWR but still based at Canton.
WSLN: A new pool based on Old Oak Common and Temple Mills for North London duties. All were previously allocated to WSAS except for 08798 which has been reinstated from WSWX and 08879 transferred south from WSMD at Toton.
WSLS: A new pool based at Old Oak Common for South London duties. All were previously part of the WSAS allocation.
WSMD: Now only contains the one shunter, 08587, a reinstatement from WSXX which presumably should have been placed into the WSEM pool.
WSNE: North East shunters only. The Humberside and Yorkshire allocated shunters have been transferred to Toton. Oddly the remaining WSNE examples are still allocated to Immingham when Thornaby would have been more logical. 08597 has been stored WNTR at Doncaster Carr from WSNE.
WSNW: Pool disbanded and Allerton’s allocation transferred away to Bescot, Motherwell or store. 08460 and 08802 are stored at Warrington.
WSSC: As was but expanded to include the three shunters out-based in the Carlisle area from WSNW.
WSWM: A new pool based at Bescot for West Midlands and North West shunters. Its allocation is made up from transfers from WSMD and WSNW.
WSWR: A new pool based at Old Oak Common for Western Region area shunters as opposed to South Wales & West. All previously allocated to WSGW except 08526.

Overall these changes leave the EWS shunter fleet with 88 allocated to traffic, a net reduction of one.

Disposal amendment & RT Rail…
Having reported the demise of 08751 yesterday it transpires this was premature. It has indeed disappeared at Booth’s however it hasn’t been cut as presumed but removed to Doncaster works where it is to be stripped for spares for RT Rail. RT Rail also advise that 08523 at Crewe LNWR is to be repaired there and repainted in GWR Green prior to transfer to the G&WR whilst 08648 is undergoing general repairs at Wabtec, its first classified attention in 15 years.

47732 47790 and 47792 at Healey Mills have been stored, all WNTR. 2 to go…

Class 56s…
The end. 56078 and 56115, still at Saltley, have been stored WNTR but not without one final fling. 56078 was requisitioned from Saltley to work the 06:08 4G05 Hams Hall to Daventry service before returning to Saltley light engine to await the chop with 56115.
Several of the recently stored Class 56s have been on the move, 56071 and 56059 from Doncaster Carr, 56091 from Rotherham Steel Terminal and 56095 from Wembley (all WNTR) have arrived at Healey Mills whilst 56060 and 56094 (both WNTR) have been moved to Knottingley from Healey Mills for de-fuelling etc. It is anticipated that all those booked to Knottingley will be returning to Healey Mills for open storage once attended to at Knottingley. Lastly 56087 (WNTR) has been removed from Scunthorpe to Immingham.

Class 86s…
Anglia have stored four Class 86s, all SAXL. The casualties are 86217 86223 and 86250 at Norwich Crown Point along with 86237 at Glasgow works.

Crewe DMD loses its allocation (at last)…
Although suspected but not confirmed until now, when the transfers and storage's of several Class 37s took place on the 29th all those still, on paper, allocated to Crewe DMD along with those transferred into WKAD from WKAC were reallocated to Toton.

43101…
It can be revealed today what is in the pipeline for 43101 (SBXL) currently residing at Brush Loughborough. It is to be extensively modified as a test bed locomotive to assess the suitability of operating a higher powered HST power car singularly with Mk 3 coaching stock and a DVT. Although it is not known at the moment whether the GM 645-12E rated at 2500 hp as fitted in the 57/6s or a GM 645-12F rated at 2750 hp as fitted in the 57/3s is to be installed the prospect of what will basically turn out to be a 125 mph capable high end Type 4 should be interesting. 43101 has been chosen for the project because it is ‘practically falling to pieces’ and as the project will involve an ‘extensive rebuilding’ of the locomotive 43101 was deemed suitable. The re-engineering of 43101 is expected to take about a year to complete so roll on April 1st next year...
