30/11/04
47258 (DHLT) has been removed from Crewe Basford Hall to Booth’s Rotherham by road being noted en route northbound on the M1 early this afternoon. For the record all the Class 47s and Class 86s bought for disposal off Freightliner have now been recovered from Crewe Basford Hall and Crewe EMD and moved to Rotherham. Outstanding and awaiting movement are 47287 at Crewe DMD along with 47205 47207 and 47334 from Southampton Maritime whilst 86603 at Wigan CRDC is, along with everything else dumped there, subject to the road transport access embargo currently in force.
87022 (XHAC) made its freight debut for DRS today piloting 66407 on this morning’s 4M44 Daventry service as far as Crewe.
90016 (WNTR) being prepared for a return to service at Crewe EMD went out on a test run early this afternoon.

FGXP…
The twelve HST power cars, 43068 43084 43092 43093 43094 43097 43098 43122 43123 43153 43155 and 43198, purchased by First have been transferred to a new pool coded FGXP, First Group Stored Locomotives.

Anglia cans…
Still going with both 86235 and 86246 in action today. 86235 worked the 08:00 1P19 Norwich to Liverpool St whilst 86246 featured on the 1P08 Liverpool St to Norwich this morning.

Intermodal…
Further to the report some days ago that Intermodal traffic with EWS might be in difficulty it should be stated that the disruption occurring at the time was due to industrial action and that the company have no plans to withdraw from this market. Indeed quite the opposite, in that, EWS are actively pursuing an expansion of this market. It might not be a major earner at the moment and although there has been a lot of speculation regarding its future EWS are adamant that they are not pulling out.

EWS Class 37s…
It has been indicated that at the end of the sandite season, shortly, the EWS Class 37 fleet will be reduced to between 15 and 20 operational locomotives from the current combined total of 53 (WKAD 10, WKBM 7, WKCK 4 & WKSN 32).

29/11/04
47114 (DHLT) has made the move by road from Crewe Basford Hall to Booth’s Rotherham today.

Disposal…
Although it is not known exactly when its cutting took place it has now been established that the remains of 86237, last seen during the late summer before being buried under a pile of scrap, has been disposed of at Sims Metals Cardiff. 86237 was stored from the IANA pool as recently as April this year, RIP.

28/11/04
47776 and 47786 (both WNXX) have been moved from Healey Mills to Knottingley for de-fuelling etc.
86634 (DHLT) has made its move from Crewe EMD to Booth’s Rotherham for disposal being noted in transit via road traversing the M1 yesterday afternoon.

27/11/04

Disposal…
At Booth’s the cutting of 08419, only delivered to Rotherham from Doncaster Works within the last week, has been undertaken, RIP.

37510, progress report…
At Barrow Hill the repairs to HNRC owned 37510 are steadily on going. It has undergone a bogie change and three traction motors have been replaced. Bodywork repairs are in hand and the loco has been run up and tested. With a release date of February 2005, 37510 is to receive an E exam and TPWS equipment then undergo a re-application of Inter-City livery.

26/11/04
47353 (DHLT) has made the trek by road from Crewe Basford Hall to Booth’s Rotherham today.

Movements in the pipeline…
47776 and 47786 (both WNXX) deposited at Healey Mills yesterday have been assigned to Knottingley for de-fuelling etc. Meanwhile Canton residents 37704 (WNYX) 47761 (WNTR) 47772 (WNTR) and 56100 (WNXX) have been pre assigned to make their move from Cardiff to Margam on or by December 1st.

25/11/04
08786 (WNTR) has been on the move again having being transferred south from Doncaster Carr to Eastleigh.
47339 (DHLT) is the third Class 47 to make the move by road from Crewe Basford Hall to Booth’s Rotherham being noted at several places en route today.
47776 and 47786 (both WNXX) have been removed from Warrington to Healey Mills. They were conveyed east today in the consist of the 6E33 Knowsley to Immingham service hauled by 66211.
47828 at Willesden has been transferred to the SBXL storage pool pending redeployment to another operator. Cotswold Rail have been offered and are likely to be taking 47828.
57307 and 57314 have been transferred to the ATTB ‘Dellner fitted’ pool leaving only 57311, recently admitted to Brush for modification, allocated to ATLO.
86249 out of use for quite some time at Polmadie, although it was retained as a VT training locomotive, has been transferred to SAXL. This development renders the already defunct IWPA cross country pool completely obsolete now.
87013 (GBAC) entered traffic with GBRf this afternoon taking over the northbound 4Z22 service, a 30 wagon freight, from 66703 at Willesden. The shape of things to come perhaps…?
87015 latterly off lease at Willesden has now been stored, SBXL. The IWCA Class 87 allocation is now down to 17 examples, less than half the fleet.
92004 sidelined at Crewe EMD has now been stored WNTS, its replacement in the WTAE pool is 92022 which has been reinstated from WNTR.

24/11/04 21:05
57315 (ATTB) was released into traffic from Brush Loughborough this afternoon as planned.
90147 (DFLC) sidelined for the last two and a half years after suffering fire damage whilst working a southbound Freightliner near Tebay in March 2002 has at long last been released from Crewe Works. 57002 hauled 90147, the only one still numbered in the 90/1 series, round to Crewe station this afternoon before shunting it back to the EMD for special tests prior to its re-entry (as 90147 or 90047?) into traffic.

24/11/04 14:35
47157 (DHLT) has been moved by road to Booth’s Rotherham from Crewe Basford Hall.
92022 (WNTR but now hired to WTAE) when reinstated looks set to swap places with 92004 (WTAE) which has been out of use at Crewe EMD since the 15th with wheelset problems. 92022 went out on test this morning from Crewe to Crewe via Stafford.

58003…
Further to the recent report about 58003 being deposited into the Training Compound at Toton it should be noted that its centre body modular sections have been replaced.

Rotherham arrivals…
It has been confirmed that 47193 completed its move to Booth’s Rotherham sometime yesterday afternoon and has been placed straight into the cutting area whilst 47157 arrived at 14:00 today. Another arrival is the derelict remains of 08419 (now de-registered) latterly located at Doncaster Works which has arrived in the last day or so.

Canton shunters, data entry errors…
Although reported on the 22nd that according to the system five of the six stored Cardiff shunters had been relocated to Tidal it has been confirmed that they are still located on Canton. Yesterday afternoon 08499 08651 08792 08955 08994 and 09008 along with 37412 37415 37509 37704 47761 47772 and 56100 were all present and correct. Also noted on site were ‘sandite’ allocated 37419 and 37692.

EWS Class 37s…
With the anticipated Class 37 cull looming, the sandite season provisionally ends on December 10th, what does the future hold for the likes of 37057 out of use at with traction motor problems at Crewe EMD since late September and 37114 sidelined with engine troubles at Bescot since earlier this month? Two other non performers of note are 37410 at Thornaby, out since late October, and 37422 at Toton, stopped since the 12th, both with engine defects. Over the coming weeks we shall see if the Class 37 fleet is reduced to its pre sandite level of around 25 operational locomotives or if this time the cuts are going to be deeper.

23/11/04
08776 (WNTS) was removed from Trafford Park to Crewe EMD by road sometime last week being replaced by recently reinstated 08897 from Allerton.
47193 (DHLT) has been on the move again by road but its current whereabouts are unknown.
57315 (ATTB) is due to be released from Loughborough midday tomorrow.
87022 (XHAC) went out on what was probably a test / training run today from Carlisle to Carlisle via Holytown and Motherwell with 37602 in tow.

Anglia Cans...
Although they try to get by without using them 86235 and 86246 were both in action today, 86246 working the currently unique ONE liveried Mk 3 set. Non runners since the end of October, 86232 86234 and 86260 remain dumped at Norwich.

22/11/04
47193 (DHLT) is on the move from Crewe Basford Hall to Rotherham by road having made it as far as the Crewe (Junction 16) lay by off the M6 by late afternoon.
60046 (WCAN) has been released back to traffic following traction motor fire damage repairs at Toton.

Canton clear out…
37248 (WNTR) 37413 (WNXX) 37428 (WNXX) and 56062 (WNSS) have been removed from Canton to Margam whilst 08499 (WSXX) 08651 (WNYX) 08792 (WNXX) 08994 (WNTR) and 09008 (WNTR) have, according to the system, been removed to Cardiff Tidal.

Toton clear out…
37065 (WNTR) 37375 (WNTS) 37797 (WNTR) 58003 (WNXX) and 58012 (WNXX) have been shunted into the Compound at Toton today, stored 08480 doing the honours. The removal of heavily stripped and engine less 58003 to the compound confirms that it has been stripped for spares rather than for repair.

Sparkies to return…
Two Crewe EMD incumbents, 90016 and 92022 (both WNTR), appear to be on their way back to traffic. Whilst 90016 is undergoing a B exam 92022 is showing K ATR which indicates that it is awaiting a test run following a light overhaul. Whether 90016 is connected with the following remains to be seen but there has been an unconfirmed suggestion that Freightliner are to hire an EWS Class 90 as cover for the fire damaged 90050...

66951…
Following haulage to East London from Crewe on the 19th 66951 has spent the weekend on ’special tests’ at Dagenham seemingly poised to shortly enter traffic on the CTRL. It and 66952 at Willesden are still not Network Rail certified.

20/11/04
86636 (DHLT) has arrived at Booth’s Rotherham for disposal. Following road transportation from Crewe yesterday it was unloaded and admitted to the yard this morning.

87016…
Contrary to a report in the press, well a certain magazine out today, the disposal of 87016 at Caerwent has not been completed although part of its bodywork has been removed to gain access to its transformer.

19/11/04
37248 (WNTR) 37413 (WNXX) 37428 (WNXX) and 56062 (WNSS) at Cardiff Canton are showing ‘transfer’ status so their removal from Canton to Margam appears imminent.
87022 (XHAC) has been released from LNWR running north to Carlisle with 37605 this afternoon.

18/11/04
08616 (HGSS), which last saw the inside of a heavy repair establishment back in the 1980s when it was overhauled at Swindon, has been despatched to Wabtec from Tyseley for attention.
66951 (DFHC) has been moved again, from Rugby to Crewe, being noted on Basford Hall late yesterday.

Toton…
58003 and 58038, both devoid of engines, have been readmitted to the main shed whilst in the compound ‘sold locomotives’ 47702 47767 and 56061 have been shunted together which may indicate collection is in the offing. It has however been noted that they are currently parked in the cutting area...

17/11/04
37688 (WNTR) 37695 (WNTR) 47737 (WNSS) and 47773 (WNXX) have completed their move to Healey Mills. They were hauled north yesterday from Wembley to Doncaster Belmont in the consist of the 03:27 6E98 service before being tripped to Healy Mills behind 67021 in the 11:16 6G85 working.
47816 (ATSP) has, following a period off lease, been returned to use with VT. 47828 (ATSP) remains out of use and off lease at Willesden.

TTFN
58049 and 58050 (both WZFF) have been despatched to France. The TSO liveried duo were sent to Dollands Moor via the 6B15 service this morning before going through the tunnel in the consist of 4404.

Disposal…
At Booth’s Rotherham the scrapping of 86417, stored from Crewe’s WEOE pool in September 2001, has been completed, RIP.

Class 87s...
With 87001 87023 87025 and 87030 all being recently returned to front line duties after various repairs / attention 87029 (SBXL) currently at Wembley has been stood down again to store, its hire to IWCA being cancelled.

Loughborough Grid and Toton Teddy-Bear…
Former Cathays resident 56097 has been transported from South Wales to Brush Loughborough by road. It is to undergo a bogie change and be fitted with an overhauled power unit. Scrapped sisters 56080 and 56047 being the respective providers of these items. Meanwhile Class 14 D9529, masquerading as 14029, a number which it may well have gained had it survived into the TOPS era, has been delivered to Toton for, most likely, tyre turning.

57315…
57315 can be regarded as such now its conversion from 47234 at Brush Loughborough is complete.

Replacements…
Ex Rio power cars 43071 and 43091 have entered traffic early with FGW quite probably as direct interim replacements for 43019 and 43029 damaged in the collision at Ufton Nervet on the 6th.

FGW Class 47 farewell jolly…
Bookings for this tour, scheduled for December 11th, opened yesterday. Please be advised that tickets have been selling fast.

Advenza…
The overnight Advenza freight service which has run for the last few weeks as a trial, which by all accounts went well, should be back in December utilising EWS traction.

EWS Intermodal…
There has been a lot of talk doing the rounds regarding the recent cancellation of several EWS Intermodal services. It has been indicated by EWS that this is only a temporary situation due to on going industrial action, the same industrial action that has affected several tours in recent weeks, as opposed to a complete pull out of the market as has been mooted. However other sources indicate that this is a market that EWS may ‘not miss too greatly’. So *if* there is to be a permanent reduction of EWS Intermodal workings there will no doubt be a knock on effect as regards the redeployment of traction resources. On going…

16/11/04
58049 and 58050 (both WZFF) have been released from Temple Mills and were towed to Wembley this morning to await forwarding to France.
86618 (DHLT) has completed its move by road from Crewe to Booth’s Rotherham.
87022 (XHAC) is now in DRS colours at LNWR Crewe, only the addition of a few decals is outstanding.

15/11/04 22:25
86618 (DHLT) the first of a batch of Class 86s bough for disposal by Booth’s from Freightliner to be moved east is on its way from Crewe EMD to Rotherham overnight tonight by road being noted traversing the M1 this evening.

15/11/04 21:50
08786 (WNTR) has been released from Wabtec and moved across to Doncaster Carr joining 08597 08582 08752 09021 and 08953 parked in a row at the EWS depot.
37405 (WKAD) whose future at one point was a tad suspect has been released from long term repairs at Thornaby.
37688 (WNTR) 37695 (WNTR) 47737 (WNSS) and 47773 (WNXX) are on the move from Temple Mills to Healey Mills being hauled to Wembley this afternoon by 66043.
60011 (WNTR) currently receiving attention at Toton but not quite completed has appeared outside whilst 60066 (WNTR) was undergoing load bank tests today.

Correction…
It has been established that 08994 and 09008 are still located at Cardiff Canton, noted there today. Evidently their proposed movement to Tidal has not taken place yet.

14/11/04
58040 (WZFF) was hauled from Wembley to Dollands Moor early yesterday morning then through the tunnel to France.
66951 and 66952 (both DFHC) have left Toton, 66618 hauling them south yesterday afternoon. Whilst 66952 has been taken to Willesden for cab modifications 66951 has been moved to Rugby and is on hold pending developments.
87001 (IWCA) has been returned to action being noted working last night in top n tail mode with 87004.

12/11/04
08596 (RFSH) has also been removed from Daventry by road, being noted traversing the M1 on the back of a low loader this afternoon, for repairs.

Toton report…
Supposedly Holland bound 58038 has been stripped down like 58003 was some days ago, all its centre section including the power unit has been removed. Can it now be assumed that 58038 is to receive the power unit that was in 58003?
Stored 60018 was admitted a few days ago whilst the repairs to 60011 are at an advanced stage, its fire damaged roof sections have been replaced.
82146, the ‘ghost train’ DVT, is also currently inside the main shed having forward facing video camera equipment fitted whilst 08703, usually the local yard pilot, is inside in bits.

Anglia notes...
At Crown Point 47714 has been fitted with MU working equipment (the RfD developed green circle variant) to enable it to be worked in multiple with Cotswold Rail’s ‘no heat’ Class 47s, 47200 and 47316.
Further to the earlier reports that we might have been getting Class 87s for Anglia thunderbird duties this may turn out to be a non starter as it is understood that consideration is now being given towards hiring in EWS Class 90s as and when required. Technically, from an operations point of view, this makes sense, albeit not as interesting.

Shunter news…
EWS have reinstated two and stored two. 08897 is reinstated back into the WSWM pool replacing 08776 which has been stored WNTS at Trafford Park whilst 08907 recently put back into traffic at Sheerness has been reinstated to the WSLS pool displacing 08921 to store WNTS at Temple Mills. Cotswold Rail’s 08871 has been removed from Daventry by road to Brush Loughborough for derailment repairs, the Daventry curse strikes again, whilst GNER blue 08892, usually the Wabtec pilot, has turned up at Tyseley to displace 08616 which is going / has gone to Wabtec for attention.

Work in progress…
At Booth’s Rotherham the disposal of 86417 is underway.

45112…
Further to the earlier report it has been pointed out that 45112 provided haulage for today’s convoy from Derby to York. 47355 went with them to be utilised as the taxi back to Derby for the crew.

11/11/04 14:00
43086 and 43159 at Derby have been reinstated to the IMLP operational pool from SBXL. Regarding 43086 it turns out that it was this power car removed from Crewe on the 9th, not 43087 as stated. 43087 remains at Crewe.

Fragonset convoy…
47355 hauled the repaired 37350, repainted 45112 and stored 47715 from Derby to the NRM York today. They will be appearing at this weekend’s modern traction event at York.
45112 was to have hauled 37350 and 47715 to York yesterday but it failed shortly after departure from Derby and the ensemble had to be retrieved by 47355.

10/11/04
08907 (WNTR) latterly in store at Temple Mills has been returned to use at Sheerness.
08994 and 09008 (both WNTR) have been extracted from Cardiff Canton to Cardiff Tidal for further storage. It is anticipated that all the stored shunters at Canton are to go to Tidal whilst the stored mainline locomotives are expected to be going to Margam.
37688 37695 (both WNTR) 47737 (WNSS) and 47773 (WNXX) currently at Temple Mills are to be moved away, possibly to Healey Mills.
58040 (WZFF) remains at Wembley awaiting forwarding to France whilst 58049 and 58050 (both WZFF) are still at Temple Mills receiving attention.

09/11/04
09106 (WNTR) has been taken to Doncaster Carr as anticipated, this is confirmed.
43087 and 43159 (both SBXL) have been moved from Crewe works to derby Etches Park by road. 43087 this afternoon, 43159 yesterday. It is understood that they are to be returned to use, short term, with Midland Mainline.
58040 (WZFF) was taken south from Bescot to Wembley this afternoon, a day later than initially planned, in the consist of the 6A42 service behind 66051.

08/11/04
58040 (WZFF) was allocated to be forwarded to Wembley via this afternoon’s 6A42 service from Bescot although at the time of writing there was no indication as to whether it had been included in the consist.
86209 86227 86230 and 86242 (all SAXL) have been moved from Willesden to MoD Shoeburyness.
87029 (SBXL but on hire to IWCA) is still in use on West Coast diagrams. It has been suggested that 87029 has been taken back on the books due to problems with either BR blue 87001 or most likely the defective 87031.

Work in progress…
At Crewe works the disposal of 86611 has started meanwhile 86631 is still with us, just, as only most of its frame and two thirds of one cab remain to be dealt with.

Disposal…
The cutting of 37904, the first of its sub Class to be disposed of, has been completed at Booth’s Rotherham. Since storage from Cardiff’s LNHK pool back in April 1996 37904 passed into private ownership before being traded with 56023 for 56003 earlier this year, RIP.

09106 (WNTR) has been removed from Goole by road following the arrival of its replacement, 09007. The current location for 09106 is unknown although Doncaster Carr is a possibility.

04/11/04
60006 at Toton has now been stored, joining 37375 in the WNTS storage pool. It’s assignment for storage had been removed and a reprieve did at one point appear to be on the cards but obviously this was not to be. 60006 is replaced by 60037 which has been reinstated to the WCBN pool from store at Toton.
87006 and 87028 (both SBXL) have been tripped across from Willesden depot to the nearby Willesden Brent yard presumably to await transfer. Next stop LNWR perhaps…?

Toton activity…
Although it had been assigned for store 60006 appears to have gained a reprieve as it has been on the wheel lathe of late whilst stored 60037 which itself nearly made a return recently only to suffer a minor fire whilst on test has been noted running about the depot confines today. 60046, another fire damaged member of the Class, which was in the cathedral annex yesterday, has also been noted up and running about the depot today. This afternoon Seco 58040 was busy shunting stored 60066 about whilst 56046 has been admitted to the shed. Finally MML power cars 43056 and 43074 have arrived at Toton for tyre turning.

Shunter changes…
08569, recently deposited at Toton has been stored WNTR. It had been on hire to Midland Mainline at Derby whilst 08899 was away at Wabtec for repairs.
09106 at Goole has, following a generator failure, been stored WNTR. It is replaced in the WSEM pool by 09007 transferred in from WSNE which in turn has been replaced by 08953 from store at Doncaster Carr which is reinstated to WSNE from WNXX.

58049…
Further to the question regarding its livery in today’s earlier update it has been established that 58049 has been repainted TSO yellow and blue.

02/11/04 15:20
58003 (WNXX) has been extensively stripped at Toton. Cabs, frame and not much else remain however it has been established that 58003 is undergoing a quite comprehensive repair and Holland has been mentioned.
58009 (WZFF) was hauled from Doncaster to Wembley overnight by 66023.
58049 and 58050 (both WZFF) at Old Oak Common have been assigned to Temple Mills for tyre turning. Although it is known that 58050 is in TSO colours does anyone know what livery scheme has been applied to 58049?

01/11/04
43069 and 43070 (both SBXL) have / were moved from Neville Hill to the NRM York this afternoon. They are to feature on the museum’s forthcoming modern traction event scheduled for the 13th & 14th of November.
58009 (now WZFF at last) has been moved from Toton to Doncaster Belmont en route Wembley and ultimately France. Replaced by 58009, 58012 at Toton has been reallocated to WNXX from WZFF.

60500…
Noted at Toton today was 60016 which has been physically renumbered 60500. As the locomotive carries the name of a magazine which is about to reach its 500th issue it can be assumed this is why 60016 has been renumbered as such. The people at Rail will have to be extra nice to EWS now...
