31/10/05
20096 (still HNRS) and 20905 (HNRL) had another outing today journeying to Hope to collect 20056 from Lafarge and returning it to Barrow Hill.
37178 (WNSO) has been collected from Eastleigh Yard and is Rotherham bound overnight by road whilst 37219, its recent stable-mate in Eastleigh Yard, has completed its move into preservation being delivered to the Chasewater Railway yesterday.

McEDs…
As planned 87012 hauled 73204 and 73205 north today to act as barrier vehicles for the movement tomorrow of a HST coaching set from Craigentinny to Willesden for onward transfer to Plymouth Laira.

GBRf shunter…
08885 has been released from repairs at RMS Locotec Dewsbury painted in GBRf blue and has been despatched by road to Whitemoor where its decals will be applied. To improve things for the residents living adjacent to the yard at Whitemoor 08885 has received silencer modifications.

Meridian no show…
The anticipated entry into traffic of 222004 with MML this morning failed to materialise, the diagram being covered by a HST set today.

30/10/05

Disposal…
08239 which was withdrawn from Neville Hill in July 1984, some 21 years ago, has been put out of its misery at Kingsbury. Scrapping taking place in the last day or two, RIP.

73208…
Further to the mention the other day regarding 73208 seemingly being on hire to GBRf it has been established that 73208 is now the property of GBRf and has been despatched to St Leonard's for a C exam and a repaint into a heritage style colour scheme is understood to be planned.

The jaunt…
It’s looking like 73204 and 73205 will be the participants in tomorrow’s jolly north to Scotland. Both are reported to be located at Willesden already so it would appear that the Tonbridge to Willesden leg will now not be required.

29/10/05
43086 and 43159 (both SBXL) at Neville Hill are being prepared for movement away for further storage, possibly to either Bicester or Long Marston.

Disposals…
At Norton’s Liverpool the disposal of 08739, stored from Allerton’s DAAN pool in September 1997, has been completed, RIP.
Over at Rotherham Booth’s have completed the demolition of 47762 and 37074 appears to be next in line for disposal. 47762 was stored from Crewe’s WHCD pool in May 2001, RIP.

Work in progress…
The demolition of 47474 at Thomson’s Stockton is underway.

Brush 43s…
43099 and 43102 (both IECP) have arrived at Loughborough to be fitted with the Brush designed cooler groups as fitted to some MML power cars already. 43062 (QCAR) and 43196 (SBXL) are also still on site for attention.

37230 (WNSO) has been collected from Toton and transported to Booth’s Rotherham by road today. 37220 (WNSO) is next in line for removal being placed in position for loading at Toton after the departure of 37230.
37261 (MBDL), having been repainted in DRS colours at Carnforth, has been despatched to Kingmoor for use with its new owners whilst 37197 (MBDL) is still working for WCRC.

Real-air...
Making another welcome return 73202 (IVGA) has been out on Gatwick Express duties today working the 07:00 Victoria to Gatwick and 07:50 return, the 08:30 out and 09:20 return workings. 73202 then paid a visit to Stewarts Lane for attention before returning to Victoria to work the 14:00 out to Gatwick and corresponding return working. It is understood that there is every chance of further 73 plus stock use due to a temporary unit shortfall. 73208 (IVGA) meanwhile appears to be / has been on hire to GBRf being noted in the Tonbridge area in the last few days.

26/10/05
37797 (WNSO) has been extracted from Toton and transported to Booth’s Rotherham by road. Loading during the morning it left Toton at lunchtime for its one way trip to Rotherham and disposal. 37797 was unloaded at Booth’s at about 16:30.
60026 (WNTR) en route to Toton from Hither Green has been on the move being relocated to Peterborough.

ED Convoy…
73210 and 73211 (both SBXL) have been collected from Eastleigh Works and transferred to Stewarts Lane. 73136 (MBDL) on its mainline return hauled 73210 73211 along with 73204 and 73205 (both GBED) from Eastleigh to London during the afternoon.

25/10/05
08994 (WNTR) has, as suspected, been deposited at Doncaster Carr.

Toton…
37230 and 37797 (both WNSO) have been moved onto the line adjacent to the paint shop indicating that extraction by road, both are Rotherham bound, may soon be in the offing. Meanwhile 37220 (WNSO) which has been on shed for removal of its power unit, this one being the duff motor initially installed in 37422, has been moved into the compound.

Pools stuff…
The sixteen VT 57/3s have been transferred en masse from Willesden to Longsight whilst Fastline (the operations arm for Jarvis) have created RCJA, a new loco pool, and transferred Loughborough incumbents 56045 and 56124 to it.

Eastleigh 73s, updated…
Further to yesterday’s report following extraction from Eastleigh Works 73210 and 73211 (both SBXL) are to be taken to Stewart’s Lane not Tonbridge as originally stated. The GBRf 73s are booked to go through to Tonbridge after detaching 73136 73210 and 73211 at Stewart’s Lane. Selected reported timings (thanks Roger) for these runs are…

0Z80 Tonbridge to Stewarts Lane (2 X GBRf 73s)
Tonbridge 04:59, Sevenoaks 05:19, Denmark Hill 05:55, Stewarts Lane 06:08

0Z80 Stewarts Lane to Eastleigh (2 X GBRf 73s + 66702 + 73136)

0Z73 Stewarts Lane to Tonbridge (2 X GBRf 73s)
Stewarts Lane 15:55, Denmark Hill 16:02, Sevenoaks 16:43, Tonbridge 17:06

24/10/05
08994 (WNTR) which had been thought to be heading for the North East has been on the move again but was noted this morning on a low loader heading into Doncaster and subject to confirmation looks to have been taken to Doncaster Carr.
37416 (WKBM) has been released from repairs at Toton.

Eastleigh 73s…
A trip to Eastleigh Works on the 26th (Wednesday) has been put in place to collect 73210 and 73211 (both SBXL) and remove them to Tonbridge. Haulage is to be provided by two GBRf 73s and Booth’s escapee 73136 (MBEL) making its return to the mainline.

22/10/05

Shunter moves…
Four of the ex Canton Class 08s have been on the move again with 08651 (WNYX) 08792 and 08955 (both WNXX) being moved up from Newport to Bescot and 08994 (WNTR) being moved to Heanor‘s at Langley Mill. The three Bescot deliveries were deposited at the West Midlands depot yesterday and whilst 08792 and 08955 have joined the other stored Class 08s in the yard 08651 is still on its low loader near the depot. With regards to 08994 and 09008 it is therefore assumed that these are destined to be moving to Tyne Yard.
09107 (WNTR) latterly in store at Doncaster Carr was moved by road to Motherwell about a week ago with, presumably as a back load, 08675 being removed south from Motherwell to TJ Thomson’s Stockton.

37242…
No longer in preservation the ownership of 37242 has reverted to HNRC and consequently it is re-listed on the storage lists. HNRC have advised that as 37242 is deemed to be in generally good condition and as restoration work has been carried out on it whilst at Barrow Hill it will be returned to running order and re-offered for sale in due course.

Loughborough Grids…
Stripped and without bogies 56029 has been deposited in the car park at Brush whilst 56034, a source of spares although deemed suitable for a rebuild if required, is inside being stripped for spares along side 56045 and 56124 currently undergoing overhauls. 56009 (otherwise sometimes known as 56201) is still on site noted tucked away in one of the test sheds.

21/10/05
08939 recently moved to Aldwarke from Bescot has been reinstated to Toton’s WREM pool.
56104 (WZGF) was despatched through the tunnel to France this morning.
92001 sidelined at Mossend with wheelset problems has been stored WNTS. Perhaps its recent trails with the jumbo coal trains have proved too much for Hugo. 92015 from store at Crewe EMD is reinstated to WTAE from WNTR as the replacement for 92001.

Tug shuffle…
60004 at Toton, 60026 at Hither Green but assigned for movement to Toton, 60056 at Toton and 60057 at Thornaby have been stored WNTS swapping places with 60035 from store at Toton, 60039 and 60042 from store at Immingham and 60077 from store at Thornaby which have been reinstated to the WCAN / WCBN active pools. Four out and four in but the active fleet remains static at 85 working examples.

Need parts etc…?
Booth’s have set up a new website where Railway Preservationists and Railway Enthusiasts can find out what parts and components are currently available for purchase at CF Booth. It’s early days yet and more content is yet to be added but the address for anyone interested is… www.rollingstockcomponents.com

20/10/05

Barrow Hill clearout…
Although the pending removal of 47628 from Barrow Hill for scrap has already been mentioned it has been established that several of the long term stored Class 31s on site are also to be moved out to Hull’s for disposal with 31411 and 31417 being prepared for departure at the moment. As to how many of the 31s, most of which have been in storage since the mid 1990s, will be going is open to a certain amount of conjecture with current estimates ranging somewhere between three and all of them.

Canton clearout…
All the stored shunters bar 08499 have now been extracted from Cardiff Canton to Newport Docks. A special lower floor low loader had to be employed to facilitate the removal of 08651 (WSYX) 08792 (WNXX) 08955 (WNXX) 08994 (WNTR) and 09008 (WNTR) due to the need to negotiate a low bridge at the entrance to Canton depot. These five shunters are to be forwarded elsewhere on standard trailers at a later date with Tyne Yard and Bescot being mentioned as their eventual destinations.

Disposal…
The disposal of 87015, stored from the West Coast IWCA pool in November 2004, has been completed at Caerwent, RIP.

Van news…
With the GBRf duo of 87012 and 87019 continuing to ply the WCML metals, both being involved in charter work from London to Birmingham yesterday, things are not looking too bright for 87002 which has been stopped at Wembley with a traction motor defect. Meanwhile at Willesden work involving swapping the transformer from 87031 to 87001 has come to a stand pending developments.

19/10/05

37407 (WNYX) has completed its movement to Scotland. Having being noted on a low loader on the M74 near Lockerbie at lunchtime today 37407 has since arrived at Mossend where it has been unloaded to await transfer to Motherwell.
37416 (WKBM) noted outside at Toton this morning has undergone its bogie change. It is understood to have received the bogies from under 37422.
43069 and 43080 (both SBXL) and trailer set have been hauled from Neville Hill to Long Marston behind 66536.
86426 (WNSO) has completed its move by road from Crewe EMD to Booth’s Rotherham.

Work in progress…
At Booth’s the demolition of 47762 is underway.

Toton power cars…
Four Midland Mainline power cars have visited Toton. 43052 and 43076 turned up yesterday with coach 42097 sandwiched between them then left without the coach. 42097 was collected this morning by 43064 and 43082.

18/10/05 20:45
09008 (WNTR) has been removed from Cardiff Canton by road. It is understood that this and the other EWS shunters on site, except for 08499, are being transferred to somewhere in the Newport area.
37407 (WNYX) en route from Wigan CRDC to Scotland by road had only made it as far as Charnock Richard services on the M6 between Wigan and Preston by this morning whilst 86426 (WNSO) is on the move by road from Crewe EMD to Booth’s Rotherham having being noted on a low loader near Uttoxeter earlier today.
56104 (WZGF) has been released from Bristol Barton Hill being conveyed to Wembley via the 6M33 service from Avonmouth behind 67012.
57001 stopped at Eastleigh for data recorder attention (Qtron probably) has been stored DHLT.

Long Marston...
43069 and 43080 (both SBXL) with their set are booked for haulage from Neville Hill to Long Marston tomorrow, due off Neville Hill at 11:22, where they will join 37010 and 37170 recently transferred to Long Marston, albeit by road, from Wigan CRDC. The use of Long Marston for housing stored railway items is set to increase in time with its reinstated rail connection and covered accommodation for storage purposes. Indeed it has been indicated that a number of locomotives and other surplus equipment currently located at several locations including Bicester may be heading to Long Marston in due course. HNRC shunters 08818 and 12082 are now located here for shunting purposes.

Ghost in the machine…
Well there are several in reality, locomotives still on the system after being scrapped, but the de-registration today of 87005 and 87015 from SBXL prompts the reminder that 87016 scrapped December last year is still in evidence allocated to SBXL. For the record the other ‘ghosts’ on the system are 31174 37068 37141 37334 37341 37359 37404 37509 47156 47221 and 86611.

18/10/05 13:25
08739 08837 and 08880 (all WNSO) have been removed from Allerton by road the short distance to S Norton at Liverpool Docks. Whilst 08739 was noted parked on a low loader outside Norton’s both last night and early this morning 08880, the last of the tree to leave Allerton, was extracted shortly before lunchtime today.
08939 (WZTS) has, following removal by road from Bescot yesterday afternoon, been deposited at Aldwarke.
43092 and 43153 (both FGXP) made the move from MoD Bicester to Reading behind 47830 this morning, 43122 (FGXP) has been left behind at Bicester.

17/10/05 20:45
08939 (WZTS) has been removed from Bescot by road. Its destination, other than thought to be a Corus plant somewhere, remains unclear.
37407 (WNYX) is on the move north overnight following extraction from Wigan CRDC early evening headed for Mossend for forwarding to Motherwell. With regards to what is to be brought south when the trailer returns from Scotland the situation is far from clear at the moment. Although it had been speculated that 37152 at Motherwell may be collected it transpires that this one is likely be making its move to Carnforth by rail whilst 47484 which was initially in the frame for transfer south as a back load looks set to be staying north of the border a little while longer, possibly due to the ongoing issue with 37197. It has been suggested that Thomson’s bound 47757 at Carlisle Upperby may be collected for transfer to Stockton instead.
43092 43122 and 43153 (all FGXP) are booked for haulage, probably by 47830 again, from Bicester to Reading tomorrow morning.
56104 (WZGF) at Bristol Barton Hill has been out-shopped in Fertis colours.

17/10/05 15:00
43068 43084 43097 and 43098 (all FGXP) have been hauled from MoD Bicester to Landore. Running as 5Z52 traction, this morning, was provided by 47830. The removal of these four power cars leaves just three First Group owned power cars at Bicester (43092 43122 and 43153) awaiting extraction.
86430 (WNSO) has completed its move by road to Booth’s Rotherham from Crewe EMD via a stop over at Langley Mill.

16/10/05

Disposal…
The dismantling for spares of the three Class 87s stored at Caerwent is underway with 87005 having being disposed of and 87015 half done, reduced to cabs and frame. 87005 was stored from Willesden’s IWCA pool in September 2003, RIP.

Bicester extractions…
Several stored First Group power cars are set to be removed from Bicester to Landore tomorrow with a second extraction, expected to be going to Reading though, to follow the day after. Selected reported times for tomorrow’s drag are Bicester 08:22, Didcot 09:13, Swindon 09:49, Bristol Parkway 10:19, Newport 10:40, Margam 11:35 and Landore 12:00. Currently in store at Bicester for First Group are seven power cars; 43068 43084 43092 43097 43098 43122 and 43153.

15/10/05
86430 (WNSO) has been removed from Crewe EMD by road. Noted yesterday passing through Langley Mill on the back of a low loader the Rotherham bound Freightliner liveried 86 loos like its spending the weekend at Heanor's.

14/10/04 21:30
47150 and 47197 have been stored, both DHLT at Crewe Basford Hall. Although 47197 had been on restricted duties in the Crewe area of late 47150 with slightly under 7800 hours on the clock was stopped on return from Wilton yesterday as it was in need of a B exam. No doubt the lack of OTMR equipment and the impending deadline for the fitting of such tackle will have been an influencing factor in the decision to dispense with their services. Ironically whilst on the same day Freightliner Heavy Haul can dispense with these two Class 47s they hire in 47145 from FM Rail which has been rented to the DFLH pool today.
90020 (WEFE) has been out-shopped from the paintshop at Toton with its EWS colours re-applied.

Disposal…
The demolition of 37903 on site at Crewe DMD is as good as complete as only its frame and very little else remained this afternoon. 37903 was stored from Cardiff’s WKHN pool back in December 1998, RIP.

14/10/05 01:30
47791 (WNXX) is still on Saltley but is now pretty well hidden away behind the office buildings.
66083 (WBAN) is back in the UK being returned from France via the 00:40 4401 service from Frethun to Dollands Moor yesterday morning. Apparently it was used for some kind of re-railing exercise with SNCF whilst in France.

Norwich Cans…
Further to yesterday’s report the six redundant Class 86s at Norwich (86218 86232 86234 86235 86246 and 86260) have now been returned to their usual place in the sidings adjacent to Crown Point depot.

13/10/05
37152 (WNSO) at Motherwell appears to be ready for collection which will probably involve a trip to Mossend for loading to road transport to take it south to Carnforth, possibly when 37407 comes north from Wigan CRDC. It has also been noted recently that 37421 (WNTR) which was sort of in the frame for a return to use back in August appears to have had some components removed whilst inside at Motherwell indicating that it had been deemed unfit for resurrection.
37219 (WNSO) has been moved out from Eastleigh depot into the nearby yard to await collection by road and transfer to the Chasewater Railway. Also in Eastleigh Yard is Rotherham bound 37178 (WNSO) still awaiting extraction by road.
47150 (DFLH) has been identified for storage by Freightliner. Having worked from Crewe to Wilton today on return to Crewe 47150 is assigned for N ONE. Some wag on control evidently has a sense of humour as its next allocation on the system is ‘Gillette’ as in razor blades.
57003 and 57004 (both DHLT) are now located at Coatbridge FLT near Glasgow, 57003 moving north from the Southampton area overnight whilst 57004 had reached Carlisle en route by yesterday lunchtime.

Romanian Cans…?
Now we have further talk of Class 86s going abroad but this time Romania has been mooted. On the one hand it may be just more silly season stuff but on the other hand it has been indicated that this is on the negotiation table and is probably where the Poland rumour sprang from. Anyway a development which may or may not be connected is that sometime in the last couple of days or so the redundant Class 86s at Norwich have been rounded up and moved over to the depot area.

12/10/05 19:30
08690 (HISE) sidelined at Derby since mid 2001 was returned to use during September.
37100 (WNSO) remains at Tyne Yard awaiting removal to Thomson’s Stockton, evidently its proposed collection yesterday not materialising, meanwhile 37131 (WNSO) extracted from Wigan CRDC by road yesterday evening has completed its move to Peak Rail and into preservation.
47791 (WNXX) appears to have been removed from Saltley in the past few days.

12/10/05 13:00
37131 (WNSO) which is destined to go to Peak Rail in Derbyshire was removed by road from Wigan CRDC yesterday evening.
57003 has also been stored DHLT. After working this morning’s 4O18 Lawley St to Millbrook service 57003 was transferred to store and is assigned for movement from Millbrook to Southampton Maritime.
57004 (DHLT) is on its way north to Coatbridge today via the 4S59 working from Crewe however by 12:30 due to problems on the WCML it had only made it as far as Carlisle Yard.
73141 (QAED) has been moved by road from Ludgershall to York. It is understood to have been deposited at the former works complex.
87004 and 87010 (both SBXL) have made their move from Wembley to Oxley being hauled north this morning by 47828.

11/10/05
08701 (WSXX) latterly located at Crewe EMD has been transported by road to Tyne Yard. After the delivery of 08701 it is anticipated that 37100 (WNSO) will be removed on this trailer from Tyne to Thomson’s Stockton.
56115 (WZGF) made its move, as planned, from Wembley to Eastleigh yesterday evening for load bank testing.
57004 has been stored DHLT. Although some repair work has been undertaken at Southampton Maritime evidently it is still surplus to requirements so 57004 which mid afternoon today was en route to Crewe Basford Hall in the consist of service 4S59 has been stored.
60068 from store at Immingham has been reinstated to WCAN exchanging places with 60086, one of the ‘EWS logo’ examples but stopped at Immingham since mid September, which has been stored WNTS.
66083 (WBAN) has been sent through the tunnel to France via this morning's 09:09 4404 working from Dollands Moor. It is assumed this is for test purposes in advance of 66215, being prepared for France at Toton, going abroad.

10/10/05
33008 (HNRS) latterly located at Allely’s in Warwickshire has been on the move again but not to the Northampton & Lamport Railway as anticipated but to Brush Loughborough for mechanical assessment.
43094 43155 and 43198 (all FGXP) have been removed from the West Somerset Railway to Reading DMU depot today, haulage being provided by 47150. These were the last of the First Group power cars stored at Minehead.
47840 (GBZZ) is still seeing sporadic use as required on the Old Oak Common / Paddington stock moves.
56115 (WZGF) has been booked for transfer to Eastleigh via the 18:42 6O28 from Wembley Yard.

Freightliner 57s…
The planned storage of 57001 57003 and 57004 appears to have been cancelled and repairs where required have been authorised. The status of the three early evening was…

57001 DFTZ Ipswich, assigned to Eastleigh N 394 (TPWS)
57003 DTFZ Southampton Maritime, allocated to Lawley St FLT tonight
57004 DFTZ Southampton Maritime, on repair N 112 (pistons)

Toton…
60006 (WNTS) and 60081 (WNTR) have been shunted to the rear of the depot at Toton, a move which indicates that any possibility of repair will not be forthcoming, certainly not in the short term anyway. Also to the rear of the depot are 37402 (WNTR) and 37408 (WNYX) whilst 37416 (WKBM) and 37422 (WNTS) have been admitted for attention which should see the latter being prepared for a power unit exchange.

April 1st already…?
Two notable rumours doing the rounds at the moment deserve a mention. The first, one which initially cropped up a few weeks ago, involves the export of a number of Class 58s, ten being mentioned, to Australia to work with Silverton Rail whilst the second theory to surface is the possibility of several Class 86s being put to work in Poland, the ones recently retired from Anglia apparently being in the frame for this. However a slight lack of 25Kv electrical infrastructure over in Poland may prove a difficulty with this one...

With regards to the 58s EWS currently have 20 of the Class in store, 30 are already at work abroad in Holland, France and Spain, but many of the 20 still in the UK are in a bit of a state and major work would be needed to get some of these up and running again. The recent sheeting over of two Class 58s at Toton, ostensibly to keep the elements out although a recent quip mentioned keeping the water in, may lend credence to there being some kind of requirement. Only time will tell with these items.
One last thing to mention regarding the 58s and Australia is the concern over whether or not they will actually run upside down :~o

I’ll get my coat...

Surplus 57s…
It has been indicated that Freightliner are to store three Class 57s on a short term basis. Due to spare capacity within the Class 66 fleet at the moment it has been decided that two Class 66s can be cascaded to release the three Class 57s to store. The three candidates, for storage at Coatbridge, are believed to be 57001 57003 and 57004.

Very little remains of either 47519 at TJ Thomson’s Stockton or 47536 at Booth’s Rotherham, both respectively being little more than a frame and one cab this morning. 47519 was stored from Bescot’s WHBF pool in February 1999 whilst 47536 was stored from Crewe’s PXLD pool in November 1996, RIP.

33008…

87004 and 87010 (both SBXL) currently at Wembley have, for some reason, been assigned for movement to Norwich for tests however this may turn out to be a spurious entry on the system as it is understood that although 87004 and 87010 due to be removed from Wembley they are expected to be going to Oxley.
