31/03/06

92033 (WTAE) has been stopped status N ONE at Crewe EMD.
87011 and 87017 (both SBXL) were to have been moved from Bicester to Long Marston today but their transfer has been cancelled due to a track defect at Long Marston.

Alstom shunter shuffle...
Changes within the Alstom shunter fleet see 08696 and 08934 being reinstated to the ATLO operational pool swapping places with 08454 08611 and 08617 which have been stored ATXX. As far as can be ascertained 08454 is located at Willesden, 08611 at Longsight and 08617 at Wembley.

New sheds...
Currently en route the five new Class 66s for GBRf and the Metronet contract, 66718 to 66722 inclusive, have been registered on the UK system and allocated to HQ SAXL.

30/03/06

47829 (RTLO) sidelined at Crewe DMD holding sidings since June 2005, it was failed with engine problems late May 2005 whilst working a Cardiff rugby special, is now regarded as stored. From the 28th its status was altered to Su (stored unserviceable).
57012 (DFTZ) recently reported as being stopped at Crewe with fire damage, it was its alternator apparently, has been admitted to Brush for attention being delivered to Loughborough today by 66568.
87009 87020 and 87034 (all SBXL) have been extracted from MoD Bicester and moved to Long Marston today, haulage being provided by 47714 and 47813. This leaves just 87011 and 87017 (both SBXL) at Bicester awaiting transfer to Long Marston.

29/03/06

EWS Class 37s...
Having being active for almost a fortnight following their release into traffic from store at Bescot and Temple Mills respectively 37669 and 37670, currently operating in the South Wales area, have now been reinstated to the WKAD pool and allocated to Margam. The fleet total remains static at nine examples though as 37405 undergoing repairs at Toton and 37406 sidelined for attention at Motherwell have been stored, both being reallocated to the WNTS pool.

Stored 37s on repair include; 37402 WNTA Toton, bogie change, exp ok 30/04, 37405 WNTS Toton, alternator replacement, exp ok 06/04, 37406 WNTS Motherwell, wheelsets, exp ok 07/04, 37410 WNTA Doncaster Carr, bogie repairs, exp ok 06/04 and 37422 WNTS Toton, engine swap, exp ok 30/04. And not forgetting WNTA allocated 37668 in the yard at Healey Mills which is, quite probably spuriously, still showing 'special tests'.

Unlucky 13...
EWS have identified thirteen Class 60s for storage, due to be stopped between April 4th and 6th. The 13 earmarked for the proverbial bin are 60009 60040 60042 60043 60047 60053 60066 60069 60074 60085 60091 60093 and 60095 and are destined for storage at variously Thornaby, Doncaster Carr, Immingham or Toton.

28/03/06

37197 (MBDL) at Carnforth is now in DRS colours ready for handover whilst 37402 (WNTR) at Toton has been authorised to undergo a bogie change, a development that indicates this to be another prospective returnee.
87018 (SBXL) has been transported by road to Long Marston from MoD Bicester. The five Class 87s still at Bicester, 87009 87011 87017 87020 and 87034, are also to be removed to Long Marston at some point but these will be going by rail in two batches.

DRS notes...
At Brush Loughborough 37051 has been undergoing component recovery including the removal of its power unit meanwhile the XHBS and XHNR pool allocations have been disbanded with the reallocation of all the Class 20s and Class 37s from XHBS and XHNR to the XHNC pool.

27/03/06

The return of the Grids...
It's almost two years to the day since the Class 56s were eliminated from UK mainline operation, 56078 and 56115 just surviving a couple of days into April 2004 after handling the farewell tour on March 31st, but today 56301 (the former 56045), the first Class 56 overhauled by Brush Traction for Jarvis, operating under the Fastline Freight banner, was released into service for its new owners this afternoon. Running to Doncaster 56301 left Brush a little later than advertised with FM Rail's 31128 in tow, a Class 47 was originally to have been provided for insurance but in the event 31128 was turned out this morning. Welcome back...

25/03/06

Disposal...
The demolition at Booth's Rotherham of 37697 stored from Toton's WKGN pool in April 1999 is almost complete, only its frame and bogies remained this morning, RIP.

56301, the itinerary...
Monday 27/03 sees the anticipated return of Class 56 activity on the UK mainline with the release of 56301 from Brush. Below is the planned schedule...

09:00 FM Rail Class 47 light engine Derby to Loughborough
12:15 56301 + FM Rail Class 47 DIT Loughborough to Doncaster Roberts Road
15:00 FM Rail Class 47 returns light engine Doncaster Roberts Road to Derby

Smalmstown clear out...
The six Class 20s still in residence at MoD Smalmstown, 20016 20032 20057 20072 20088 and 20215, are believed to have been moved across to the nearby complex at Longtown as site clearance and track lifting has been taking place at Smalmstown. A short spur from Longtown down to the road loading point at Smalmstown has been left in situ to facilitate the movement out of the remaining Class 20s stored on site in due course.

24/03/06

08909 (WREM) has been returned to Ketton from repairs at Doncaster and 08933 (WNTR) in use during its absence has been removed by road back to Temple Mills.
60007, already active, 60023 from store at Toton along with 60051 and 60055 from store at Thornaby have been reinstated to the WCBN pool. These reinstatements bring the fleet operational strength up to 77.
73203 and 73207 (both GBZZ) have been removed from Peterborough being hauled to Tonbridge behind 66710 this afternoon. Whilst 73203 was later taken through to St Leonards with 73205 and 73206, 73207 has been left in Tonbridge West Yard.

23/03/06

37405 (WKCK) currently inside at Toton for repair has had its internals removed.
43090 and 43100 (both IECP) plus coaching set have been collected from Long Marston being hauled north today to Neville Hill by 47714. The power cars were detached from the set at Neville Hill then forwarded to Brush, Loughborough where it is understood they are to enter the MTU re-engineering program. Their eventual release and entry into traffic on the ECML should in turn allow for the release from traffic and rotation through works for MTU re-engineering of the GNER power car fleet that are to be re-engineered.

West Coast 87s...
This one's been on the back burner for a few weeks but now the cover diagram for the Pendolino modification program has been sorted out and looks set to come into force with the timetable change in May. The Mk3 loco hauled set is diagrammed for the
06:20 Rugby to London Euston, 16:52 London Euston to Birmingham New Street and the 19:00 Birmingham New Street to London Euston with an ECS back to Rugby. The set will be on stand by in London during the day and may be pressed in to use on other workings if required.
Subject to one or two minor formalities the traction for this diagram, which looks set to run for approximately six months, will be Class 87s but in a change to plan A, which was to be in top and tail mode, it's to be a single Class 87 with coaching stock and a DVT. Traction is expected to be 87002 and 87026 which were briefly allocated to a resurrected IWCA pool recently before being reallocated to the GBAC pool whilst on hire to GBRf.
It is understood that the plan to use four Class 87s has been amended because of the non availability of any suitable examples due to several of the better locomotives in storage being ring fenced for the 'Bosnia Job'. Only the Class 87s in store at Bicester appear to be available but as these are in need of major attention they have been discounted.

56301...
As far as can be ascertained and subject to the usual availability disclaimers it is planned to have 56301 out on test from Brush, Loughborough next Monday 27/03/06.

22/03/06

37423 has been removed from Carnforth and transported to Brush, Loughborough by road whilst 37427 (WKBM) is back in traffic having being released from repairs at Motherwell.
37669 and 37670 (still WNTS and WNTR respectively) have been despatched to Scotland making their way north of the border from Carlisle this morning.
43090 and 43100 (both IECP) at Long Marston should, if all goes to plan, be on the move tomorrow. They are to be taken to Loughborough.
60007 (WNTS) from store at Immingham has been released into active traffic. Still in Loadhaul colours 60007 has had a set of EWS stickers applied sort of on top of the Loadhaul logos.

Work in progress...
The demolition of 37697 at Booth's, Rotherham is underway.

21/03/06

08928 (HNRL) has been removed from Barrow Hill by road being taken away on the low loader that had delivered 08818 (HNRL) from Long Marston.
33029 (MBDL) has entered traffic with WCRC venturing out for a spin from Carnforth to Butterley and back today with 33207.

20/03/06

20903 (HNRL) actually went north, it transpires, when removed from Kingmoor on the 16th having turned up at Glasgow Works for a bogie change.
43090 and 43100, currently languishing at Long Marston, have been reinstated from SBXL to the GNER IECP pool. It may be conjectured that these two power cars, both sidelined since autumn 2003, will be receiving some serious attention before entering service on the ECML.
56070 (WNTR) and 56112 (WNXX) have completed their transfer to Old Oak Common being hauled from Wembley by 37419 this morning.
47810 (now CRRH) sidelined since last September with traction motor problems has returned to use following repairs at Norwich.

Disposal...
No superstructure, just bogies, frame and some internals are all that remain of 47779 at Kingsbury. 47779 was stored from Crewe's WHDP pool back in August 1999, RIP.

56/3s...
The reasons behind why the Fastline Class 56s are being re-designated as 56/3 and numbered from 56301 onwards is because they are receiving a number of reliability related modifications including the fitment of a new Argon fire protection system and the obligatory addition of TPWS and OTMR during their respective overhauls. It has also been established that they are not being down rated in any way as has been suggested. With 56301 and 56302 being the former 56045 and 56124 at Brush 56303 is being prepared by FM Rail at Derby from 56125.

ADFL...
A new pool for Advenza Freight Locomotives coded ADFL has been formed and 87007 has been reallocated to this new pool.

19/03/06

37669 (WNTS) was released into traffic from Bescot yesterday running south to join 37670 (WNTR) at Newport yesterday evening. 37669 and 37670 have been engaged in overnight engineering duties on the Heart of Wales line returning to Newport this morning.

18/03/06

37422 (WNTS) at Toton has been stripped out ready for its power unit swap with 37408.
73203 and 73207 (both GBZZ) at the GBRf depot Peterborough are awaiting transfer, scheduled to take place next week, to St Leonards.

Disposal...
At Booth's Rotherham the demolition of 56036, stored from Immingham's WGAN pool in January 2000, has been completed, RIP.

Corus Choppers...
As part of an announcement on the Appleby - Frodingham Railway Preservation Website regarding their forthcoming open days April 29th and 30th |  website  | there is an interesting snippet on the diesel weekend page regarding Class 20s stating '
These locos are to be used on site for the Corus rail movements from the MSM to the new rail service centre'. This traffic from the MSM (Medium Section Mill) coming on stream later this year requires higher powered traction than what is available at present so two Class 20s are being prepared for use with Corus by HNRC at Barrow Hill, 20056 being likely to be one of the two involved.

17/03/06

56070 (WNTR) and 56112 (WNXX) were hauled to Wembley in the consist of last nights 6M97 service from Doncaster Belmont behind 60034.
37670 (WNTR) has been released into traffic from Temple Mills being despatched to Didcot light engine. 37669 (WNTS) continues to receive attention at Bescot whilst the status of 37668 (WNTA) at Healey Mills has been changed from N ONE to N SPT (special tests).
60023 (WNTS) at Toton had been allocated to work this afternoon's 6K50 to Crewe and 6D51 return workings but in the event 60019 was turned out for these services.
57012 (DFTZ) has been stopped at Basford Hall showing N FRE (fire damage).

Fastline (Jarvis) 56s...
56045 and 56124 (both RCJA) at Brush Loughborough have received their new numbers of 56301 and 56302. It is assumed, pending the system being updated, that 56045 has been renumbered 56301 with 56124 becoming 56302. Their livery has now been completed with the addition of some white and yellow stripes as well as Fastline Freight branding. The Fastline web site has been updated and a link to the relevant page is http://fastline-group.com/index.php?id=49

16/03/06

20903 (HNRL) has been extracted from Carlisle Kingmoor by road being noted traversing the M6 motorway mid afternoon today.
56070 (WNTR) and 56112 (WNXX) have left Healey Mills being hauled to Doncaster Belmont by 60034. Old Oak Common bound they are booked to make their way south to Wembley via the overnight 6M97 from Belmont.
60051 (WNTS) has been stopped again at Thornaby and placed on decision.

Toton stores...
Further to yesterday's mention about the four Class 47s and two Class 58s in the compound at Toton being moved onto the siding adjacent to the paint shop it transpires that this has been done to allow for the laying of a track into the new stores building which has recently been erected to the south of the main shed at Toton.

15/03/06

20081 has been transported south from MoD Smalmstown to Long Marston by road being noted in the Brownhills area early this morning following an overnight stop over en route.
37669 (WNTS) has, following tyre turning at Crewe EMD, been returned to Bescot for further attention.
47033 (CRUR) 47326 (CROL) 47338 and 47528 (both CRUR) have been moved from the siding adjacent to Doncaster station into Wabtec.
60051 (WNTS) has been released into traffic from Thornaby exchanging places with 60055 (WNTS) which had been in use prior to being stopped at Thornaby and placed on decision.

Network Rail Class 37s...
For the forthcoming ETRMS signalling project in Wales Network Rail have procured five Class 37s, four of which are to be overhauled for the venture. Although neither locomotive supplying party concerned have confirmed the identities of the locomotives involved it is understood that the five are 37010 37100 37170 and 37178 from HNRC along with 37255 from FM Rail.
Several Class 31s had initially been set aside for this project but these have evidently been abandoned in favour of Class 37s. As an aside it can only be wondered if the talk a short while ago with regards to EWS looking at resurrecting RA5 Class 37s, RA5 being a requirement, was connected with the letting of this contract.

Disposal...
The demolition of 47628, stored from Crewe's PXLC pool back in May 1997, has been completed at Hull's, Rotherham, RIP.

37131...
The sale into preservation of 37131, currently at Peak Rail, has not been completed so its ownership has reverted to HNRC and 37131 is consequently re-listed.

Toton line up...
Six stored locomotives, as viewed from north to south; 58008 47726 47758 47781 (all WNXX) 47789 (WNSS) and 58036 (WZFH), have been parked in a line behind the paintshop at Toton. These were all earlier situated further into the compound area which appears to be in the process of being further cleared out.

14/03/06

37669 (WNTS) which went out on a test run last night to Burton on Trent has been released from Bescot running to Crewe this morning for tyre turning at the EMD.
56070 (WNTR) and 56112 (WNXX) noted being shunted out of the storage lines at Healey Mills yesterday are understood to be Old Oak Common bound at some point.

13/03/06

20902 has been removed from Barrow Hill by road being noted heading south this morning on a low loader on the M1 shortly before 09:30 en route to Long Marston.
37669 (WNTS) now sporting repainted front ends and snowploughs at Bescot has been noted up and running today indicating that a return to use may not be too far away now.
60055 (WNTS hired to WCBN) is still in traffic whilst 60051 (WNTS) has been out on test from Thornaby.

DRS 37/4...?
Although the following is unconfirmed it is understood that DRS may have exercised an option to purchase 37423 currently languishing at Carnforth.

11/03/06

87029 (SBXL) has been moved from Oxley to Long Marston. Cotswold Rail, as ever with anything to do with Long Marston, providing 47813 for the transfer of 87029 today.

Disposals...
Two to record today. At Booth's, Rotherham the scrapping of 37344 is almost complete with only its frame on bogies being in evidence this morning alongside 56036 which is about two thirds cut. Down the road at Hull's, Rotherham the disposal of 86214 entered the final stages late this morning. Whilst 37344 has survived almost a decade since being stored from Immingham's FDRI pool back in July 1996 86214 was stored from Longsight's ICCA pool in October 2002, RIP.

10/03/06

20092 has been moved overnight from MoD Smalmstown to Barrow Hill by road. 20902 at Barrow Hill has been loaded on to the road trailer that brought 20092 in but looks set to spend the weekend where it is before removal to Long Marston.
37198 due for movement to Meldon / Dartmoor Railway was loaded for road transfer from Leeming Bar this afternoon.
47775 (WNSO) is in the process of being broken up on site at Crewe DMD.
60024 (WNTS) stored yesterday at Temple Mills has been transferred to Toton as planned.
60055 (WNTS) from store at Toton has been released into traffic on hire to the WCBN pool whilst up at Thornaby 60051 (WNTS) looks set to be another returnee being noted up and running about at Thornaby earlier today.
92004 (WNTS) hauled to Warrington yesterday is now in normal traffic although still allocated to the WNTS storage pool. The return to use of 92004, one of the longer term stored 92s, out of circulation since late 2004, may be connected with the unconfirmed indication that the other SNCF owned Class 92s are to be stood down from use with EWS in the weeks to come.

09/03/06

60024 stopped at Temple Mills with engine problems has been stored WNTS swapping places with 60028 still at Toton undergoing repairs which is now reinstated to WCBN. 60024 is assigned for transfer to Toton.
86207 (SAXL) has been transferred from Smalmstown to Hull's, Rotherham for disposal, movement taking place by road overnight.
92004 (WNTS) latterly in store at Crewe EMD has been released although its current status remains unclear. Reports suggest that it was actually released yesterday to Stoke where it was stopped again. Either way 92004 was hauled up to Warrington behind 67003 mid afternoon today.

Cotswold Rail 47s...
Further to the mention yesterday of 47828 being admitted to Brush for attention to its bogies CR advise that following its release it is planned to despatch 47714 to Brush for a power unit swap and bogie attention. 47714 is also set to loose its Anglia livery during its visit to Loughborough.

37422...
The engine hours of 37422 have recently been reset to 8623, as per 37408, indicating that the power unit swap with 37408 has taken place. Enquiries made reveal however, that although 37422 has been admitted at Toton it is not yet in the heavy lifting shop whilst the donor 37408 is still dumped out to the rear of the main buildings. It is anticipated that once 37408s internals have been transplanted into 37422 the alternator from its current power unit will be making its way into 37405 to return this one back to working order.

08/03/06

60048 (WCAN) returned to active duties yesterday after re-railing at Loughborough.

Disposal...
The cutting of 86256 at Hull's, Rotherham is complete. 86256 was stored from Longsight and the ICCA pool in October 2002, RIP.

Disposal amendment...
Although its demise had been recorded over a week ago it transpires that the remains of 47774 lingered on at Crewe DMD into March and that the final cutting has taken place in the last day or so.

Brush notes...
Following snowplough fitment 57604 has been released whilst 90014 was collected this afternoon by 47813 and towed away to Oxley for repainting. 47828 has arrived for bogie attention.

07/03/06

08933 (WNTR) last sighted traversing the M25 yesterday after departure from Temple Mills has been delivered to Ketton. 08909, the resident shunter, itself only recently returned from repairs at Immingham, has been removed again by road.
20138 has arrived at Barrow Hill. It was noted en route by road traversing the M62 in both the Manchester and Bradford areas this morning en route from Smalmstown.
37087 (XHMW) is still at Glasgow Works. Evidently it transpires, its transfer south yesterday afternoon was cancelled at the last moment.
37248 (MBDL) at Carnforth is now operational following a power unit swap and Type Three Traction, its owners, advise that a return to mainline running on hire to WCRC is not too far away now. It is anticipated that 37248 will feature on the Royal Scotsman and other WCRC operated trains during 2006.
43008 (IECP) damaged some weeks ago in a shunting mishap with a Voyager at Craigentinny has been delivered to Brush, Loughborough for cab repairs.
60028 (WNTS) released into traffic yesterday has been stopped again at Toton for minor repairs whilst
60048 (WCAN) de-railed yesterday near Loughborough, nothing too serious, whilst it was about to rejoin the Midland Mainline from the GCR-N.
86207 (SAXL) the last of the five 86s from Longtown being moved across to Hull's Rotherham for scrap has been positioned at Smalmstown in readiness for collection.

Advenza Freight is a UK wide Rail Freight business with a nationwide operating licence.

06/03/06

08933 (WNTR) recently moved down from Motherwell to Temple Mills is on the move again by road being noted traversing the M25 this afternoon.
08936 (now ATLO) recently deposited at Wembley has been hired by Cotswold Rail to Alstom and consequently has been reallocated to the ATLO pool. 08936 had prior to its transfer to Wembley been on hold at Allely's Haulage where 08699 and 08809 (both CREL) latterly located at Tyseley at Brush respectively are now in residence.
20138 from MoD Smalmstown is en route overnight tonight to Barrow Hill by road.
37087 (XHMW) has been released from Glasgow works being collected and taken south to Kingmoor this afternoon by 37259.
60011 sidelined at Toton with fire damage has been stored WNTS. It is replaced in the active fleet by 60099 from store at Immingham which has been reinstated to WCAN. Meanwhile 60028 (WNTS) from store at Toton has been released into traffic.
87002 (GBAC) has entered traffic with GBRf working this afternoon's northbound 1S96 mail service from London.
92017 (WNTS) is now, according to the system, located at Crewe EMD showing as having been moved north from Temple Mills late February.

05/03/06

Disposal...
The demolition of 47757, stored from Crewe's WHCD pool in February 2004, has been undertaken at Thomson's Stockton. RIP.

04/03/06

Disposal...
The scrapping of 47566 at Booth's is as good as complete, only its frame and bogies were in existence this morning. The demolition of 37344 is now underway. 47566 was stored from Crewe's PXLD pool back in November 1996, RIP.

03/03/06

60099 (WNTS) at Immingham is repaired and ready to undergo a test run.

South Wales developments...
37411 (WKCK) has been released from its B exam at Temple Mills and has made its way to South Wales this afternoon behind 50031 (MBDL) en route from Old Oak Common to Canton to join 50049 (MBDL) already in the Principality for use with ATW. 50049 has been in the vicinity undertaking driver training runs off Cardiff in the past week or so.
Tomorrow is rugby day so Arriva will be putting on two top and tail loco hauled sets featuring 37411 47805 47847 and 47854. In the longer term it is understood that 50031 and 50049, along with two other Class 50s once prepared for mainline use, will be seeing use on several Arriva diagrams based on South Wales. In addition further developments should see the Class 37/4 requirement increase in time.

EWS 37s...
37410 has been started on Doncaster Carr and its return to use seems to be on course. Regarding the note about 37042 donating its power unit there has been some confusion over what is in the pipeline for this one. Initially it looked like reinstatement was planned for 37042 then news came in that it had been run up to test the suitability of its engine for donating elsewhere if required so when 37410 was extracted from Healey Mills to Doncaster Carr the chance of it becoming a donor seemed to be a possibility although this is off the agenda at the moment. As stated a few days ago the situation with the 37s is very fluid and for the moment the only definite prospective returnees appear to be 37410 and 37670.
At Toton it is understood that the cannibalisation of 37408 to return 37405 and 37422 to working order is set to go ahead although as far as is known neither 37408 or 37422 have yet been taken in for stripping out.

56/3...
It has been advised that the Jarvis Class 56s being restored to running order at Brush are to be released to traffic numbered from 56301 onwards.

MTU 43s...
With regards to the Angel press release (see 01/03/06) it transpires that this press release was in reference to the HST power cars already in use with FGW which are to be re-engineered, presumably after the First owned FGXP allocated power cars have been dealt with. The reference to the additional power cars being sourced from MML was due to the shortfall in the current fleet totals, 95 allocated to the IWRP pool along with 12 allocated to FGXP making 107 as opposed to the apparent projected rebuild total of around 117 to 120 power cars.

37410 (WNTA) recently move across to Doncaster Carr from Healey Mills and 37670 (WNTR) at Temple Mills have been authorised to undergo B exams. Whether 37410 is still getting the power unit from 37042 as has been mooted is not clear at the moment.
37422 (WNTS) at Toton is now showing A 100 which may indicate that a move is to be made towards trying to repair it again.

92006 / 92043...
Further to yesterday's comment regarding the storage of 92006 and 92043 and their being reallocated to the WNWX pool as opposed to WNTR or WNTS it has been pointed out that this is more than likely because these are two of the SNCF owned machines that have been in use with EWS. With the recent news that SNCF have applied for a licence to operate freight trains in the UK it can be wondered if the removal from traffic of 92006 and 92043 is connected.

Yet more MTU...
Angel Trains have announced on their web site -http://www.angeltrains.com/Press/release.aspx?Id=595 - that an additional 26 HST power cars are to be re-engineered with MTU power units for the Greater Western Franchise, the work to be undertaken at Brush.
