"When you started 'End of the Line' did you realise what kind of monster you were creating?"

I was asked that early in 2005 whilst on a jaunt to Holyhead and the answer to the question poised was no. When I set out with the website back in mid 1999 I really didn't have any idea how things were going to take off. I remember getting 32 hits one day and being impressed with that... It was initially envisaged that the site, it was simply a series of lists in the beginning, would be updated monthly when the magazines went to press. With hindsight I now realise this was never really going to be the case.

As the site has evolved over the years the content has expanded and the daily visitor count has climbed steadily. This all adds up to one thing, higher bandwidth use and ever increasing costs, the reason why the proverbial begging bowl is being proffered here.

After outstripping the free web space with my Cable & Wireless account, remember the vcom.cwc.net address?, the site went to its first commercial host, as wigancrdc.co.uk, who pulled the plug in 2003 because bandwidth had become an issue with them. After paying a hefty ransom to regain access to the files on their server the site was downloaded and transferred to the current host becoming wnxx at this point. As an aside the domain wnxx was applied for when the wigancrdc address was set up but at that time was unavailable due to already being in use as a Chinese porn site!

Since moving to the current hosts, who have proved to be totally reliable, the monthly paid for hosting package has been upgraded several times to keep ahead of the bandwidth requirements but by late 2005 things again came to a head when it was discovered that by this point the bandwidth being used per month had reached a level above what was generously allocated as part of the hosting package. A notice regarding the situation was issued and this can be viewed at the following link  |  Bandwidth  |

Rather than go and take sections of the site down the decision was taken to acquire another domain to host part of the site on thus further increasing the running costs. It was also decided at that time to make available a facility for people to pay towards these costs hence here we are with this page.
