"Flagship 24 'Calbourne' was
built in 1891 for use on London suburban services. In 1925
it was one of 23 members of the O2 class transferred to the
island and hauled trains until the demise of steam on the
Island in 1967 and became the sole member of the class to be
preserved. The four wheel carriages it is seen working were
built between 1864 and 1896 and were in regular use until
the 1930s when bogie carriages were introduced. The
carriages owe preservation to being used as beach huts and
used on farms until purchase by the railway 30 to 40 years
later.
198 was built in 1953 by Hunslet for the Army and
transferred to the railway in 1992 from the National Army
Museum. The Edwardian bogie carriages making up 198's
consist were built between 1911 and 1924 and transferred to
the Island railway in the 1930s remaining in service until
1966. Six were preserved by the railway and one rescued from
the mainland having been used as a bungalow in Chichester.
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway website provides details of
the line's three ex BR Ivatt locomotives (one on lone to
K&ESR) and 'Terriers' as well the rest to be found in the
works, museum and yard. Recently replaced ex 1938 London
Underground Metropolitan Line stock 483006 is presently in
the museum." |
