Over the years there has always been a number of locomotives in storage at various locations around the country but following the privatisation of the British Railway’s network, from the mid 1990s onwards, the number of locomotives in storage increased dramatically to a peak of almost 800 locomotives in store in 2005.

Several operators opted for new build or re-engineered replacements for the locomotives inherited from British Rail and there was a general slowing down of disposals whilst individual operators assessed and re-deployed their assets.

There are currently several hundred locomotives that fall into the withdrawn/stored categories, a situation that can, and indeed quite often does, change on a daily basis.

The main aim of this site is to keep track of this ever changing situation, logging movements, additions to or reinstatements from store, disposals etc. plus a few other items of interest besides.

In listing their locations and other developments it is important that any additions, movements or corrections are noted. Your help in keeping these records up to date is required, and in many cases invaluable, so a massive 'thank you' to everyone who has contributed so far and continues to contribute to this day.
